Eligibility For Enrolment in Summer Courses
Macquarie University Students
Macquarie University students, both citizens/permanent residents and international students, may apply. International students who are not enrolled at Macquarie University in 2008 but who have a letter offering a degree place at Macquarie in first semester 2009 may also apply.
Students From Other Universities
Enrolment is also available to students from other universities, except where the Schedule of Summer Course units indicates that students must have previously attempted the unit at Macquarie.
HSC 2008 Students
Summer Course units are also available to students from Macquarie University Partner Schools who have completed the 2008 Higher School Certificate with a UAI of at least 70.00, except in the case of the first Economics units, ECON110 and ECON111, which are restricted to students with a UAI of 85.00 or better and with a minimumof HSC Mathematics performance band 2.
Please note: Acceptance into and completion of a summer course unit does not guarantee admission to an undergraduate degree at the University.
International SIBT Students
All currently enrolled SIBT students, including SIBT students who are enrolled in the Advanced Diploma after completing a Diploma are not eligible to enrol in the Summer Course program.
International SIBT students who have an offer of a degree place, but who are not yet enrolled in a Macquarie degree may apply for Summer Course enrolment.
You will first need to ACCEPT your offer of a degree place at Macquarie in first semester 2009, PAY your commencement fee and Overseas Health Cover and finally SUBMIT the completed Payment and Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Request Form.
When you have completed those steps above you can then complete a summer application form and bring or send it to the Centre for Open Education, together with:
- full payment for the unit/s you wish to enrol in, and
- a transcript showing all your SIBT results, including your most recent results, and
- a copy of your letter of offer for a place in a degree in first semester 2009
The Centre will then confirm with Macquarie International that you have applied and have been accepted for summer enrolment, and an electronic confirmation of enrolment (eCoE) will be issued according to the summer course commencement date. You will then need to contact DIAC regarding the visa process.
Local (domestic) SIBT students
Local SIBT students who have not yet commenced a degree at Macquarie must provide a full transcript of SIBT results but do not need to provide a letter of offer.
Accounting units - Please note that SIBT students who have been accepted into a Macquarie degree program, but who are not yet enrolled in that program (i.e., not enrolled in a Macquarie degree in 2008) are not permitted to enrol in Accounting (ACCG) summer units under any circumstances.
Students Excluded From The University
Please read pages 7 - 9 of the Summer Handbook 2009 (see link in sidebar) for detailed information about exclusion and how it affects your Summer Course enrolment.
The Centre for Open Education cannot take responsibility for notifying you of your exclusion from Summer units. If you are excluded from re-enrolment in the University in 2009, you will be withdrawn from any summer units in which you previously enrolled. The University will notify you by letter if you are excluded, but you are strongly advised to check on eStudent when you look up your results to see if there are any sanctions (including exclusion) loaded against you. This is particularly important if you will be overseas when exam results are released.
If you are excluded from your program of study because of double failure in a required unit, you may ask the Centre for Open Education to enrol you as a Non-award student in your summer unit/s pending the processing of your application to transfer to another degree. Any units successfully completed will be credited to your new program of study.
Students who are excluded from the University in December 2008, or whose previous exclusion does not expire until 31 December 2009 are not eligible to enrol in Summer Course 2009 units.
Prerequisites for Summer Course Units
Applicants must meet the prerequisites for any Summer Course unit in which they seek to enrol. For specific prerequisites for each unit please refer to Summer Course Schedule for that particular unit.
If you fail a second semester unit which is a prerequisite for a summer unit in which you have already enrolled, your enrolment in the summer unit will automatically be cancelled. If this happens, you will need to arrange for a waiver with the Department before you can re-enrol in your summer unit.
If you have twice failed the unit in which you plan to enrol for summer, you will also need to arrange for a third-time permission waiver.
Restrictions and Limitations on Enrolment
- Law Summer units are restricted to a maximum enrolment of 35 students per unit - enrolment on a first-come first-served basis.
- Students with a GPA of less than 1.5 are strongly advised not to enrol in more than one unit.
- Students wishing to enrol in more than two units must have approval of Head of Division, except in the case of EFS students, who are NOT permitted to enrol in more than two units under any circumstances (including units taken from any other Department in the Division or in the University or units from outside the University).
- Students will not be permitted to enrol in two summer units where there is a class timetable clash. Faculty of Business and Economics students should pay particular attention to this policy. Check the table on pages 36 & 37 of the Summer Course 2009 booklet for a list of units which do not have clashing classes.
- School-leavers with the 2008 HSC may only enrol in one unit.
Waivers
Because of the intensive nature of teaching, waivers of prerequisites will not normally be approved for Summer Course units. If waivers are possible, the conditions are described in the Schedule of Units that follows in this booklet.
Business and Economics units (where applicable) - submit directly to ERIC, E4B106 with an academic transcript either in person or by using the waiver form available from the web and faxing it to ERIC on 61 2 9850 9958. If approval is given, the Department will load the waiver. For ACCG101, no waivers of prerequisites will be given, but waivers for third timepermission will be considered and applications are made via eStudent.
If you are seeking a waiver for which you need a second semester exam result, please wait to submit the waiver until you know your results on 19 December.
Law (not Business Law) - submit to Macquarie Law office, W3A531, or fax to 61 2 9850 7686
Business Law - submit to Mrs Alma Urbiztondo's office at W3A438, or fax to 61 2 9850 9952.
