Multi-Modal Study

Macquarie University's undergraduate program is designed to facilitate flexible program planning enabling students to combine day, evening and distance education units. In some departments it is possible to combine distance education enrolment in a particular unit with attendance at internal practical sessions. The availability of this flexible pattern of attendance provides access to a wide array of units. Units offered in this mode are designated 'Xc' in the schedule of units in the Macquarie University Calendar .

As an internal student , you may chose to take advantage of the flexibility Macquarie offers by enrolling in one or more units on a distance education (external ) basis.  Distance education units may be offered as  fully external units ("X" availability in the Schedule of Units) or in composite mode ("Xc"), as mentioned above.

Fully external units are taught via audio CD-Rom, lecture notes and, increasingly, with a web component. They usually include one or two on-campus sessions each half year, and attendance is often compulsory unless stated otherwise in the Schedule of Units ("V" after the on-campus session dates denotes a session at which attendance is voluntary).

On campus sessions are generally held during mid-semester breaks, but may also be held at weekends. Some distance education units have fieldwork, which  is also compulsory unless otherwise indicated in the Handbook.

Composite mode units are offered in some disciplines. If you enrol in a composite mode unit (Xc) you will receive your study material in the mail but you will attend the internal practical classes instead of attending the on campus sessions.  If you are unsure of the requirements for composite mode enrlment, you should also check with the staff at the Centre for Open Education.
