Enrolment - Current Macquarie Students

You don't need to fill out an application form this year if you have been enrolled at Macquarie in a degree in 2008. Instead you will simply enrol in your chosen summer units online through eStudent.

If you are an International student, you will need to follow the Steps of Enrolment for International Students.

If you are a domestic student, you will need to follow the Steps of Enrolment for Current Domestic Macquarie students (Commonwealth-Supported or Fee-Paying).

Application - Non-Macquarie or former Macquarie students

This group includes any applicant not enrolled at Macquarie in a degree in 2008, including SIBT students who have completed their diploma/advanced diploma and who are commencing their Macquarie degree in first semester 2009, and students from other institutions.

You will need to fill in a Summer Course application form and you must pay the full amount of tuition fees at the time of application. The form and Summer Course booklet are available from the Centre for Open Education, or you can download the form from this page.

When do summer applications and enrolments close?

The first closing date is Friday 5 December - application by this date is recommended for all units with a limited number of places, as well as for students who do not need to wait for an exam result to pass a prerequisite, and for students enrolling in distance units.

The final closing date is Monday 22 December - students who need to know exam results before applying should make sure that they apply by 6pm on this date.

There is a late period between 23 December and 2 January for enrolments with payment of a $200 late fee.

How many summer units can I enrol in?

Two is the maximum. If your GPA is less than 1.5 you are strongly advised to enrol in one unit only.

The units I want to enrol in have clashing classes. What can I do?

You should not enrol in units in which any classes or examinations are held at clashing times. The Division of Economic and Financial Studies (EFS) will not permit you to enrol in two of their units with clashing classes (there is a chart showing which units do not clash with each other). If you decide to enrol in one unit from the Division of EFS and a unit from another Division with times that clash, you do so at your own risk. The Centre strongly advises you not to do this, because summer units are taught very intensively and missing even one class can put you at a serious disadvantage.

You should be aware that you cannot ask for special consideration for performance affected by missing classes because of clashes, and you cannot ask for clashing examinations to be rescheduled.

I need a waiver to enrol in my summer unit. How do I get it?

If you are enrolling in a unit from the Faculty of Business and Economics (EFS) you should submit your waiver to ERIC, E4B 106 with an academic transcript either in person, or by faxing the form (available on the web) to ERIC on 61 2 9850 9958. If approval is given, the Department will load the waiver. If you are seeking a waiver for which you need an exam result, please wait to submit the waiver until you know your results on 19 December.

Law waivers - submit to Macquarie Law office (W3A 531), or fax to (61 2) 9850 7686)

Business Law waivers - submit to Mrs Alma Urbiztondo's office at W3A 438, or fax to (61 2) 9850 9952

I've got a supplementary exam. Should I wait for the result before I enrol in my summer unit?

If you have asked for a supplementary exam in a unit which you think you may need to study in the summer program, you should complete a Summer Course application form and submit it to the Centre for Open Education by 5pm on Monday 22 December to ensure that you will have a place in the unit if you need it. You will not be able to enrol through eStudent in a summer unit if you are currently enrolled in the unit in second semester, so it is necessary to use the form.

As soon as you know the result for your supplementary exam, please contact the Centre and let us know. If you pass the supplmentary exam you will be entitled to a full refund of your fees for the summer unit, or you may choose a replacement unit. If you choose another unit, you must notify the Centre before teaching begins in that unit. You will not be able to enrol yourself online in a summer unit after Friday 2 January, which is the Summer Course census date.

FEES

When do I pay my fees?

If you are a current Macquarie student enrolling on eStudent, you MUST pay your fees on the same day that you enrol in your summer unit. If you don't, you will be charged a late payment fee of $200 and be subject to sanctions.

Non-Macquarie students must pay at the time of submitting their summer application form, either directly to the Centre (no cash) or at the University Cashier (if you pay the cashier you must attach a copy of the receipt to your application).

How do I pay my fees?

You can pay your fees at the Centre for Open Education by cheque, money order or credit card. Please note that EFTPOS payments have a limit of $1000.

You can also pay at the Cashier, Level 1, Lincoln Building.

You can pay online or by BPay, but you must provide a printout of the Merchant Invoice confirming the transaction with your application.

Please note that if you want an official University receipt straight away, you will need to pay your fees at the Cashier and bring or send a copy of your receipt to the Centre with your application.

Confirming or checking your enrolment

Current Macquarie students can check their enrolment through eStudent at most times. It is very important that you check your enrolment again after exam results are released on 19 December to be sure that you have not been withdrawn from your summer unit/s because of failure to pass a prerequisite or because of exclusion.

Non-Macquarie students will be sent written confirmation of their enrolment wherever time permits. If that is not possible we try will email or ring you, so please make sure that you give us a reliable way of contacting you when you fill out your application form. You are also welcome to ring the Centre (9850 7470) to ask about the progress of your application.

Unsuccessful applicants will be advised as quickly as possible.

Cancelled units

Information will be available on the Summer website after 5pm on Tuesday 23 December 2008.

If your unit is cancelled you can choose another unit but you must enrol in it, or submit a change of unit enrolment form to the Centre for Open Education by 5pm on Friday 2 January 2009.

EXCLUDED STUDENTS

If you are excluded from 2009, your Summer enrolment will be cancelled. The University will notify you by mail if you are excluded but you are strongly advised to check on eStudent to see if there are any sanctions, including exclusions, loaded against you. If you aren't sure how to check please contact the eStudent helpdesk or the Centre for Open Education. The Centre cannot take responsibility for contacting individual students to advise of their exclusion and cancellation of their summer enrolment.

If I'm excluded from the University or from my Accounting degree, can I still do a summer unit?

If you are excluded from the University (for example, if you fail to satisfy Minumum Rate of Progress rules) you will not be able to enrol in a 2009 summer unit.

If you are excluded from your degree (for example, from the Bachelor of Commerce Accounting degree because of double failure) you may be eligible to transfer to another degree program. If you find out that you are eligible to make this transfer, you may submit a summer course application form to be enrolled as a non-award student. Any summer unit/s completed successfully will be credited to your new program of study.

If you are not eligible to transfer to another degree, you should not apply to be enrolled in summer units.

Can I change my summer unit?

If you are a currently enrolled Macquarie student you can change your summer enrolment through eStudent, which will be available most of the time that the Centre is closed for holidays. If you withdraw from a unit before the census date of 2 January, your student fees account will be in credit for the amount of the fees that you paid for the unit.

If you add a unit you must pay for the additional fees, if any, at the time that you add the unit.

For all non-Macquarie students, changes of units must be made with a Summer Course Change of Unit Enrolment form, available for downloading from this webpage. Completed forms may be handed in to the Centre or mailed or faxed to the Centre (02 9850 7480). The date the Centre receives written notification of your request to change your unit is the effective date of the change. It is recommended that you check with the Centre to ensure that your form has been received safely, particularly if you send it by fax.
